Increasing the Engagement of Conversational Agents through Co-Constructed Storytelling
نویسندگان
چکیده
Storytelling can be used by conversational agents in a wide variety of domains to maintain user engagement, both within a single interaction and over dozens or hundreds of interactions over time. The majority of agents designed with this ability to date deliver their stories as monologues without user input. However, people rarely tell stories in conversations this way, and instead rely on listener contributions to guide the storytelling process. Corpus-based studies of human-human conversational storytelling have demonstrated greater engagement, in the form of longer stories, when listeners co-construct stories this way. We describe a research framework for the generation and evaluation of co-constructed social stories in the context of task-based conversations, and a study on the effects of degree of user-agent story co-construction on user engagement. We find that users are more engaged with storytelling agents that allow them to coconstruct stories in a contentful manner by asking questions, compared to co-construction through acknowledgments only.

Small Talk and Conversational Storytelling in Embodied Conversational Interface Agents
People engage in small talk and conversational storytelling to provide information in engaging ways and to serve interpersonal goals such as building rapport and credibility. Embodied conversational interface agents, that represent the computer in its interaction with human users by way of a graphical humanoid body on a screen, can also profitably engage in these behaviors. We describe the ongo...

متن کاملExploration of Affect Sensing from Speech and Metaphorical Text
We report new developments on affect detection from textual metaphorical affective expression and affect sensing from speech. The textual affect detection component has been embedded in an intelligent conversational AI agent interacting with human users under loose scenarios. The detected affective states from text also play an important role in producing emotional animation for users’ avatars....
متن کاملMultimodal Feedback from Robots and Agents in a Storytelling Experiment
In this project, which lies at the intersection between Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), we have examined the design of an open-source, real-time software platform for controlling the feedback provided by an AIBO robot and/or by the GRETA Embodied Conversational Agent, when listening to a story told by a human narrator. Based on ground truth data obtained from...
متن کاملConversational Exploratory Search via Interactive Storytelling
Conversational interfaces are likely to become more efficient, intuitive and engaging way for human-computer interaction than today’s text or touch-based interfaces. Current research efforts concerning conversational interfaces focus primarily on question answering functionality, thereby neglecting support for search activities beyond targeted information lookup. Users engage in exploratory sea...
